Illinois trims the Huskies 7-2

John Kravetz is 3-0 this season

Illinois scored seven unanswered runs to begin the game while starter John Kravetz pitched a solid eight innings in Illinois’ 7-2 win against Northern Illinois down in Carbondale today. 

Kravetz won his third game of the year and Illinois has won five of their last six.  Kravetz didn’t allow a NIU base runner until the fourth inning.  For the game, he continued to show masterful control, allowing only five hits and no walks in eight innings. 

Drasen Johnson came on in the ninth after Kravetz had given up two runs on three hits in the eighth.  Johnson got the job done pitching a scoreless inning.

Justin Parr went 3 for 3 for the game and managed to drive home the first run of the game.  Davis Hendrickson, who already having quite a year, got three hits plus iowasat 095three stolen bases.  He’s hitting .358 on the year. 

Once again, Bill Charvat (left) shows he really wants to play.  In the DH role, he went 2 for 3 including a double and drove home three runs.  Charvat played a big part in the four-run 7th inning when he singled driving home Hendrickson then eventually scored on Willie Argo’s double.  Catcher Alex Lincoln also had three hits today.

Illinois’ record is now 9-6.  With Ohio State’s loss today to Austin Peay, the Illini can claim third place as their own in the Big Ten standings

As you can see, Purdue is off to a great start in the non-conference season.

Double Duty tomorrow for the Illini.  They take on the Huskies again at 11am this time at Rent One Park in Marion, Illinois.  Matt Milroy gets a chance on the mound.  Later at 2:30pm, they face Southern Illinois once again.  Freshman Josh Ferry will be making his first career start.
