Illinois baseball gets first taste of winning record

Two games into the weekend series against Florida Gulf Coast University, I’m wondering what Coach Hartleb told them during this past week.  Whatever it was, it worked.  Remember, this is a FGCU team that enjoyed a 38-20 record just one year ago.  In just two games, the Illini have proven to be formidable opponents winning both contests.  Illinois now sits on a winning record for the first time this season (3-2).  No doubt, that gives them extra incentive for Sunday’s noon game.  No such incentive exists for the Eagles of FGCU… they are now 2-4.

It was good to see Kevin Johnson get the win (and some defensive support) in Friday night’s 6-3 game against FGCU. He had rough time in the season opener and not all of it was his doing.

I see Willie Argo had his first big game of the year Friday night.  He broke out for three hits including a double and scored twice and drove in a run.  Oh yes, he stole a base, too.

The John Anderson/Chris Pack combo seems to be working.  Today, Anderson went five solid innings as he did last weekend at the Big East/Big Ten Challenge and Chris Pack (left) followed him up with four shutout innings.  The only difference?  Pack got the win this time in today’s 7-2 game.

So far this weekend, Casey McMurray just kept hitting just like he did in the first game of the season and every game since then.   Mac had two hits in Friday’s 6-3 win and contributed two runs and two rbis.  Today, he came up with three hits including a double and another rbi.  For the season, he’s batting .450.

I for one am happy to see the offensive production from Davis Hendrickson.  In four games, he’s already got six hits and four runs.

Tomorrow is the final game against Florida Gulf Coast.  Game time is noon Central.

Go Illini!
