Illini’s 16 hits aren’t enough against CCSU

The Illini got 16 hits today against Central Connecticut State but failed to capitalize as they lost to the Blue Devils 6-4 in Winter Haven, Florida.

Offensively, Illinois had plenty of chances but didn’t take advantage, leaving 15 runners on base.  Coach Hartleb alluded to that after the game:

“I was disappointed today with our lack of composure with runners in scoring position.  We had numerous opportunities to drive in runs, but didn’t swing at good pitches.”

Lee Zerrusen who normally comes out of the bullpen, got his first start of the year against CCSU.  And he didn’t do a bad job all things considered.  In four innings, he allowed two runs and struck out four.

They may be playing in the Sunshine State but ironically, a rain delay in the eighth inning didn’t help matters when it occurred right when Illinois was threatening to rally.

This makes it two losses in the last three games for Illinois.

Box Score

Casey McMurray who was 3 for 5 today with a run and rbi, has a streak in the works.  He’s hit safely in his last 14 games.

CCSU and Illinois face off again tomorrow.  Will Strack (1-0) will take the mound against the Blue Devils.
