Key hits by Will Krug and David Kerian today
This time it was just a little bit closer. After walloping Northwestern 13-0 in Evanston on Friday, it took 10 innings for the Illini to get the job done on Saturday. They won it 6-2 on a four-run 10th inning rally keyed by big hits by Will Krug and David Kerian.
Tyler Jay got his first win of the season putting in two scoreless innings. Ryan Castellanos deserves a lot of credit though. Not only did he allow just two hits in seven innings but he deprived the Wildcats of any walks. It’s the fifth start Castellanos has done that and he’s got a NCAA-leading 34 inning streak without giving up a walk.
The win for Illinois puts them an overall record of 16-11 and a conference mark of 4-1.
Once again, Northwestern defense didn’t help them on Saturday. They booted three balls and four of the six runs were unearned.
But it was the one in the tenth inning that got the Illini started on their four-run rally. A Will Krug rbi hit and a two-run double by David Kerian sealed the win for the good guys.
It was a rough no-decision, by the way, for Wildcat starter Reed Mason who pitched nine innings and gave up just six hits and no earned runs.
