It was a big week for Illini baseball. First, Michael Massey made an appearance for the Kansas City Royals. (he’s back with Omaha but in my opinion, he’ll be back).
Now, three current players have their chance to move forward into pro ball.
Cole Kirschsieper
Starting pitcher Cole Kirschsieper was picked by the Miami Marlins in the third day of the MLB draft. He was the 352nd pick in the 12th round.
In his career, Kirsch was 13-6 with a 3.64 ERA. This season, he sported a 3.40 ERA tops on the team and seventh in the Big Ten. He also finished third in the conference wins with seven.
Justin Janas
In the same round just thirteen picks later, the Atlanta Braves picked up pure hitter Justin Janas (12th round, 365th pick). At this point, first baseman Janas has a slugging percentage AND on-base percentage above .500 with the Illini.
In 2021, Janas was the Big Ten batting champion with a .391 batting average.
Jacob Campbell
One day after the MLB draft ended, it was announced that Illini catcher Jacob Campbell was signed outright by the San Diego Padres.
Campbell is known for his defensive skills especially his strong arm. That’s not to say he can’t hit because he certainly can. He rapped 8 homers with 43 rbis in 2022 for the Illini. He won’t slow the team down either with seven steals this season.
Good luck to Cole, Justin and Jacob!!
