Two former Illini relievers are making their way up towards better things!
Joey Gerber
Joey Gerber (2016-2018) has been called up by the Seattle Mariners to their 60-player training camp. Workouts begin July 3 for Gerber.
One of top bullpen aces in the Big Ten, Joey Gerber was drafted as a junior in 2018. That year, he tied the Illini single season record for saves with 14.
Garrett Acton
I have a feeling that Garrett Acton won’t be long behind Gerber. Garrett is the one who broke Gerber’s (and co-leader Tyler Jay’s) single season record in saves in 2019 with 19. The Parkland College transfer was a superb prosect from the time he came to Illinois Field.
Acton was rewarded for his effort. He was just signed by the Oakland A’s organization.
Among other honors, Garrett was named 2019 NCBWA and Perfect Game/Rawlings First Team All-American as well as one of six players in the nation named to the 2019 NCBWA Stopper of the Year finalist list.
Good luck to both Joey and Garrett!!
