Yesterday, the Big Ten announced the 2019 individual player honors and awards. Not surprisingly, many Illini were among them. In fact, four Illinois players were listed on the All-Big Ten First Team.
Second baseman Michael Massey, outfielder Zac Taylor, starting pitcher Andy Fisher and closer Garrett Acton all earned First Team honors.
In addition, outfielder Jack Yalowitz was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team and outfielder Cam McDonald received All-Big Ten Freshman Team kudos.
I have to say I was a little surprised that Grant Van Scoy (right) did not appear on the honoree list. His .337 batting average was sixth best in the league. His .434 OBP was tops on the team.
Catcher David Craan was chosen as Illinois’ recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.
Congratulations Illini!
Big Ten Tournament update
#3 seed Illinois had a rough time with #6 seed Maryland Wednesday morning at the Big Ten Tournament. Two 2-run homeruns helped the Terps in the eighth inning and broke a 1-1 tie.
Maryland ended up winning 6-2.
With a double elimination format, Illinois must now win or go home. In another upset later in the day, #7 seed Ohio State defeated #2 seed in the second game of the tourney by the score of 2-1.
That news concerns Illinois as they must face the tough Michigan squad in their next game. Michigan and Illinois square off for another 9am game on Thursday.
Get plenty of sleep guys!
