Six rbis for Reid Roper in the last two games

The Illini cruised to their ninth straight win over the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday winning 5-1.  Starter Drasen Johnson had some help from Reid Roper’s bat.  Roper hit a three-run triple in the fifth inning to give Johnson and the Illini a bit of a comfort zone.

Johnson pitched eight innings giving up just one run.  it was his fifth win of the year and it secured the series against the Boilermakers with one game left on Monday.

Roper’s bases loaded triple broke open the fifth inning

Roper’s bases loaded triple came in the fifth inning when the game was tied 1-1.  Consecutive hits by Ryne Roper and Adam Walton followed by a walk to Ryan Nagle loaded the bases for the Illini. One batter later, Reid Roper tripled to left to score all three.  Just to be sure, Jason Goldstein added one more rbi to his total by hitting a sac fly to score Roper.

Win #5 for Drasen Johnson

Starting pitcher Drasen Johnson allowed a Purdue run in the first inning.  That was all the scoring that the Boilermakers were going to see all day though.  Drasen stayed in for eight innings giving up just four hits in the remaining seven innings and keeping Purdue scoreless till he was lifted.  He walked no one and struck out four.  J.D. Nielsen pitched a perfect ninth inning to keep the 5-1 win intact.

Random Ramblings

Gotta give the “kid announcer” Dylan from today some kudos.  He really had some enthusiasm!  Fortunately he announced during the fifth inning during Illini rally so I think we have to hand some of the credit of today’s win to him.  Nice going!

Worth mentioning… So far, Reid Roper only has two hits this weekend but each of them has drove three runs.  Clutch.

Ryan Nagle scored a key run in the fifth inning today but unfortunately he did not get a hit.  His hit streak stalled at 15 games.  Who’s got the highest now?  Jason Goldstein is at 10 games.

Next up

The Illini again go for the sweep this time on a Monday night.  Game time is 6pm.  John Kravetz is the scheduled starter.  Big Ten Network will be broadcasting the game again.

Way to go, Illini!
