Will Krug: Off to a good start
The Fighting Illini Baseball team looks to take the series win against the Georgia State Panthers on Sunday after splitting the first two games of the series. Here’s a quick recap of Friday’s and Saturday’s games:
How close was this game?
Well, the Illini were ahead for almost the whole game, taking the lead in the first and not relinquishing it until GSU tied it in the bottom of the 8th. Not only that, Ronnie Muck almost got out of a no-out, bases loaded jam by inducing a David Kerian unassisted double play. That’s when things went sour, though. He then gave up an rbi single which won it for the Panthers.
Good guys: Reid Roper hit the first Illini homerun of the year… Will Krug went 2 for 5 with a double and an rbi.
Saturday’s game against the Panthers was pretty much the polar opposite of Friday’s low-scoring, one-run game. Today’s match was slug out match with a score more suitable of a football game. While it won’t do any wonders for our pitchers’ ERAs, the outcome was exactly what we wanted… a win. The Illini slapped 20 hits in this win today.
Freshman and Alleman HS product Cody Sedlock gets his first Illini win after allowing 3 runs in 4 2/3 innings. Tyler Jay pitches two scoreless with five strikeouts for a save.
Good guys: Will Krug continues to hit with a 4 for 6 performance plus a triple and three runs. DH Ryan Nagle also banged out four hits including two doubles and four ribbies.
I’d be a little concerned about John Kravetz’ performance (5 runs in 2/3 innings) but I’ll bet Georgia State’s pitchers are needing a little more consoling tonight than he.
Drasen Johnson is on tap for the rubber game on Sunday which begins at 12 noon CT.
