The first win of the season is always nice but when it comes against a nationally ranked team, it makes it so much better.
Such was the case on Sunday when the Illini defeated #27 St John’s at the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge in St Petersburg, Florida. Illinois came back from a 3-1 deficit to win 9-4.
Pitcher John Kravetz was the big hero of the day. Coming in to relieve starter Nick Chmielewski in the first inning, Kravetz pitched 6 2/3 shutout ball allowing just two hits. Kravetz (right) struck out six and allowed just one walk. The Big Ten recognized his efforts and honored Kravetz with the conference Co-Freshman of the Week award. Congrats John!!
Bryan Roberts and Reid Roper both did fine out of the pen allowing just one unearned run in two innings.
Brandon Hohl got things going in the first inning with a solo homer. Not content to let brother Justin to get all the attention of the weekend, Jordan Parr helped his team rally in the 4th inning with a two-run homer. For the day, Parr was 2 for 3. Catcher Kelly Norris-Jones was 2 for 4 with two rbis including an rbi double in the 7th inning.
Random Ramblings
Back to Nick Chmielewski, the reports are that he had trouble locating his pitches. Chm hasn’t started a game since 2009 so mechanics might be a bit rusty or it could be a confidence issue. No doubt Chm is going to work on it with the coaching staff. I’m hoping to see him in a game soon.
That said, losing record and all, it was good to see the Illini finish the weekend on the winning note especially against a team like St John’s. To already have a player recognized by the conference sends a good message also.
Next up
Next weekend, Illinois travels to Beaumont, Texas for the YMBL Cardinal Classic. They’ll take on Gonzaga on Friday and Saturday.
